There is a secret reason why it is so hard to forgive others and it is possible to overcome it.
As an energy worker I see people every day with parcels of grudges, pocketsful of resentment and bags full of anger, sadness and hate toward someone who has wronged them. How often do you hear people tell you that they don’t talk to ‘so and so’ since 200x, or they haven’t seen their sister since they were teenagers? So, heavy and toxic as these grudges, resentments and feelings of anger and hurt are, we hold onto them like precious possessions. We don’t forgive. Why?
Because if we do forgive, we have to allow these dark emotions go, put down the excess baggage and if we do that…..what is it that we really fear?
What we really fear is forgetting and then being vulnerable again, allowing the other person to hurt us or let us down again. Holding onto the anger makes us feel empowered; it is like an armour protecting us from being hurt. Holding onto the painful memories is a safe way to remind us not to go near that person again, or not to put yourself in that position again. …and it works! It works really well. If you hate or resent another for the pain they put you through, you aren’t going to let them into your life again – ta dah! You are safe!
Or are you? How’s it working out for you, feeling anger under the surface all the time?
Do you have to avoid some social occasions in case you run into them? Do you feel cross with yourself that you still feel sadness about the situation? Do you feel heavy, bitter and resentful?
It’s not a great way to live is it? It actually hurts you more than them – they usually have no idea how you feel and if they do, they probably don’t care – or worse, they take pleasure in your discomfort. So how safe and protected do you feel now?
So now you know the secret reason why humans find it so hard to forgive… would you like to know how to? That it is possible? That it is easy?
